IED Counter Measures Evaluation

Overview

Improvised Explosive Device (IED) threat is a reality in modern patrol and monitoring roles of the Australian peace keeping forces and private security firms. Conventional vehicles have little resistance to this complex threat but vehicle modifications can substantially improve the survivability of such an encounter.

Pacific ESI has the tools to evaluate, with a high degree of confidence, the protection improvement on a given vehicle by conducting virtual “with” and “without” protection scenarios. By conducting virtual tests of various protection options, enhanced occupant protection can be achieved.

The images below show a commercial vehicle encountering an IED. Installation of blast-deflecting plates under the truck cabin greatly reduces the damage to the cabin. Anthropomorphic occupant models can be placed inside the cabin to reveal occupant behaviours.
