Pacific ESI is excited to announce that we have just supplied fluid analysis software and expertise to support the Carlingford High School students who are competing in the Subs in Schools Technology Challenge. One of our Principal Engineers, Dr Peter Brady, is volunteering his time to provide specialist advice and support for flow simulations using the latest ESI software. Pacific ESI believes that hands on exciting challenges such as these will drive the next generation of STEM workers.
The Subs in Schools program is administered by REA Foundation and aims to provide multi-disciplinary hands on programs to advance STEM education in high schools. Carlingford High School students have been competing in the programme for two years with electronics and component support volunteered by Raytheon. Dr Brady, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) specialist at Pacific ESI, recently allocated to the school by REA is excited to see the development and practice of flow dynamics simulation in a fun and hands on environment:
Having personally worked on some larger submarine cavitation projects it is exciting for me to see the talent and enthusiasm generated through Subs in Schools that will lead to our next generation of fluids engineers.
ESI Group, through its local representative Pacific ESI, is sponsoring a short-term licence of its high-performance computational fluid dynamics suite CFD-ACE+ for the students to use for simulation of their submarine’s control surfaces. Dr Brady, previously a lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), has developed a custom training programme suitable for use by high school students that is designed to get the students running fast and accurate simulations with enough information to inform their design. Mr Damian McGuckin, Pacific ESI Director stated:
CFD is a complex software tool for professional engineers but Pacific ESI is proud to have developed a simple exploratory training programme to allow high school students entry to gain valuable insights to their project
